Anti-Landlord Just Cause Legislation

There has been recent discourse from my property management forum about Councilman Jones’ Just Cause legislation. This anti-landlord / rental property legislation would allow a renting tenant to contest the legal termination of a lease, by going to the Fair Housing Commission to dispute it.

I wanted to make landlords aware that under the leadership Hapco’s President Harvey Spear, Board member Paul Badger, their attorney Paul Cohen, they have been meeting with Councilman Jones concerning the bill for quite some time.

While rental property management and landlords are still not happy with the bill, we have been able to get Jones to address some of our issues with the proposed legislation. It’s still a work in progress. The bill was held and not voted on in last Thursday’s Council session.

The Councilman has been very generous with his time to hear our concerns and those both of the Real Estate Coalition and the property management communities.

It would be a big help if you would let Jones know of your opposition to the bill by calling his office and voicing your opinion at 215-686-3416/17 or writing a letter and faxing it to 215-686-1934, also, if you are a Philadelphia resident, let your Councilman or Councilwoman know of your opposition to the bill.

Please contact and thank Councilman Oh 215-686-3452/53 and Councilman Domb 215-686-3414/15 for speaking out on the negative impact this bill would have on those of us who provide rental housing.

Thank you.
